The Sports Turf Managers Association was officially formed in 1981 to facilitate the sharing of ideas and information. The key leaders in the SFMA’s infancy were Harry “Pops” Gill (deceased), Milwaukee County Stadium; Dr. William Daniel (deceased), Professor Emeritus, Purdue University; Dick Ericson (deceased), Minneapolis Metrodome, and George Toma (NFL). The association has 2700 members and is headquartered in Lawrence, KS. In 2022 SFMA rebranded to the SFMA (Sports Field Management Association).

The Independent Turf & Ornamental Distributors Association (ITODA) is an organization aimed at connecting and educating independently-owned businesses involved in the turf and ornamental landscaping industries. Education includes a focus on developing sales techniques and packaging to promote products, marketing stewardship, and quality service for the turf and ornamental landscaping industry, all while maintaining environmental responsibility.
The U.S. National Arboretum’s Grass Roots Initiative is a four-year, in-depth look at the science behind turfgrass and how it impacts the quality of our life. The initiative features a Grass Roots Exhibit at the National Arboretum, an outdoor interactive exhibit showcasing the development of turf cultivars through science-based management and research programs. The exhibit highlights the differences in turf cultivars and management depending on their purpose which includes golf and sports fields, landscaping elements, soil conservation, and water retention.
