Tall Fescue Grass Seed

Tall Fescue, Festuca arundinacea, is a cool-season grass that establishes well in both partial sun and shady areas such as under trees. There are Forage-Type and Turf-Type Tall Fescue varieties that are most commonly found throughout the midsection and northern areas of the United States. Because of its resilience in high-traffic areas and excellent wear resistance, Tall Fescue provides an excellent turf for high-traffic areas such as athletic fields. Tall Fescue had a deep root system with roots that can grow to a depth of 4 to 6 feet, taking in moisture that shallow-rooted grasses cannot reach. It is more drought, shade, heat stress, and disease tolerant than many other cool-season grasses.

Tall Fescue spreads by shoots from the crown known as tillers. It requires low to moderate fertilization and water with a recommended mowing height between two and four inches. Most Turf-Type Tall Fescue varieties are naturally insect resistant due to high levels of endophytes. Most Tall Fescue varieties available are coarse-textured, wide-bladed, and adapted to various soil types and climates.
