Tall Fescue (Festuca arundinacea) is a cool-season grass known for its adaptability and durability. It establishes well in both partial sun and shaded areas, making it an excellent choice for lawns under tree cover. There are two main types of Tall Fescue: Forage-Type and Turf-Type, both commonly used across the central and northern regions of the United States. Tall Fescue is especially well-suited for high-traffic areas such as athletic fields due to its excellent wear tolerance and resilience. One of its standout features is a deep root system, with roots reaching depths of 4 to 6 feet—allowing it to access moisture unavailable to shallow-rooted grasses. As a result, it demonstrates superior tolerance to drought, heat, shade, and disease compared to many other cool-season grasses.
Rather than spreading by above-ground stolons or underground rhizomes, Tall Fescue spreads through tillers, which are shoots that emerge from the base of the plant. It requires low to moderate levels of fertilization and irrigation, and thrives when maintained at a mowing height of 2 to 4 inches. However, recent research from Iowa State University and the PARC Research Center has shown that some new varieties can tolerate mowing heights as low as ½ inch. Earlier Tall Fescue varieties were characterized by their coarse texture and wide blades, but modern breeding advancements have led to the development of finer-bladed cultivars that closely resemble the appearance of Kentucky Bluegrass, offering improved aesthetics without sacrificing performance.
